El Pas de la Casa: A Mountain Getaway in Andorra

El Pas de la Casa is a small mountain town with a population of around 3,000, sitting right on the border between France and Andorra. The resort became known for its ski slopes, duty-free shops, and genuine alpine-getaway atmosphere. The town sits at an altitude of around 2,080 meters, 30 km from Andorra's capital, Andorra la Vella. While Catalan is Andorra's official language, English and French are also widely spoken here. The ski season usually runs from late November through mid-April.

For a long time the town's architecture followed the French style: stone buildings that gave it the look of a medieval fortress. But over the last two decades Pas de la Casa has changed a lot. Alongside the traditional structures, modern buildings with original designs have appeared, including a new town hall and a museum of local history and culture.

The history of Pas de la Casa as a ski resort began in the mid-1950s, when the first ski lift was installed on one of the mountain slopes. That kicked off active development of the tourist infrastructure.

In 1956, Francesc Viladomat, a businessman and ski champion, opened the first lift at the summit of Coll Blanc in Pas de la Casa. New lifts began appearing every year, and in the 1980s automatic snow cannons arrived, making the resort even more appealing. In 1993, the local government became the company's majority shareholder and began developing new cable cars. And by 2003, the largest ski area in the Pyrenees had been created — Grandvalira.

The resort offers over 200 km of ski runs suited to both beginners and experienced skiers. A single ski pass gives you access to all the trails and lifts across the Grandvalira area.
